This substantial, hardbound book forms the conference volume for the 12th International Clay Conference held in Bahía Blanca, Argentina in July 2001, the first time the AIPEA conference has been held in Latin America.
The title, a pun on Stanley Kubricks 1968 landmark science fiction classic (2001. A Space Odyssey), reflects the organizers hopes for the development of clay science in the new century and its potential importance in improving the standard of living in both the developed and developing world. Odyssey indicates a long, wandering and eventful journey, immortalized in Homers epic poem, but could also sum up the Editors feelings about the long and tortuous process of publishing such a conference volume!
The book opens with a special lecture by Haydn Murray who provides an excellent state-of-the-art summary of Clays in Industry. It is followed by valuable, extended keynotes from Andreis (the sedimentary succession of the Tandilla System, Argentina), Dondi (clays in ceramic tile manufacture) and Churchman & Volzone (activation of clays for environmental uses).
